Fear is something that people have to struggle everyday of their lives. There is that fear of rejection, fear of failing, fear of making the wrong decisions. It is caused by uncertainty. It is caused by lack of trust in oneself or in one’s capabilities. These are normal fears. They can be explained and they have valid reasons. What if the fear felt is something so unnatural with no obvious reasons at all? One might fear dogs because they could bite and cause rabies. However, what if the dog is so cute and yet the person is still shaking and struggling to get pass it? Some people might be too scared to cross the street, climb the stairs, or go to the highest floor of a building. What if by simply being in an elevator, they feel like they are being suffocated? What if even though there is no possible threat in looking at the color yellow or green, they still run like crazy away from it? If these are the cases happening, the fear becomes known as phobia. Phobias develop because of previous experiences with the object. Fear of the dog could have sprung from having been bitten in the past as a child. Fear of driving might be because of a previous accident one encountered on the road. Fear of men might be because of what the person saw men did in his or her family’s life. Whatever reasons these people might have for their phobias; it is all in their subconscious. Automatically, once they see the feared object or person, they experience severe anxiety, dread, and distress. As much as possible, if given the chance, they would run away just to escape from it. If you are a person with a phobia or with multiple phobias and you feel that it is becoming too hard to handle it because it affects your life too much, online counseling might benefit you. With the help of a counselor, one is allowed to address their fears so they have the opportunity to face them gradually. They are taught to use modeling of behavior (positive reinforcement) and step by step exposure to the feared object (systematic desensitization). For example, if a person is afraid of dogs he or she would first be made to look at dogs more in pictures. Then later, she would be made to look at dogs from afar. The exposure would be increased bit by bit, closer and closer, until such time that they are able to get near the dog to pat its head without feeling anxious. In online counseling, one would be able to speak with a counselor with the use of their computers or phones. Techniques would be taught in the process. One is also given encouragement, hope, and support in what they are going through. Phobias are not permanent. Acknowledgement of the need for help, online counseling, and doing whatever it takes to face their worst fears, are simply the primary steps.
